3 Signs You Need Dental Crowns

August 6, 2024

Taking good care of your teeth is crucial for your overall health and well-being. According to Colgate, visiting the dentist twice a year is a good rule of thumb. However, even if you're diligent about your dental care, there can still be times when more intensive treatments like dental crowns are needed to restore damaged teeth. Here are three signs that it may be time to talk to your dentist about getting dental crowns.

1. Your Tooth Is Badly Decayed

If you have a tooth that is severely decayed or has a very large cavity, a dental crown may be required to protect what remains of the tooth structure. Dental crowns entirely encapsulate the visible portion of the tooth, acting like a protective cap. This helps prevent further decay and damage. If nearly half or more of a tooth's structure is gone due to decay, a crown is often the best restorative option. Don't put off your dental care if you notice large cavities; see your dentist right away to prevent losing the tooth entirely.

2. You Have a Fractured Tooth

Cracks or fractures in your teeth need prompt dental care and attention. Otherwise, the crack can deepen and expand, eventually resulting in tooth loss. Dental crowns are the treatment of choice for fractured teeth since the crown covers the entire tooth and holds the fragments together. This prevents the crack from worsening.

Let your dentist know right away if you fracture a tooth, even if it's just a small crack or chip, so they can assess if a crown is needed. Don't wait until the fracture worsens or becomes painful. Early intervention is key.

3. You Have a Weakened Tooth

Teeth can become weakened and more prone to damage for various reasons. If you have a compromised tooth that is at higher risk for future fracture or decay, your dentist may recommend placing a dental crown to protect it. The crown acts as a shield and absorbs chewing forces, preventing stress on the weakened tooth structure underneath. Don't let a weakened tooth go unaddressed, as the situation will likely only get worse. Seek dental care to strengthen and safeguard the tooth.

Only your dentist can determine conclusively if you need a dental crown. However, if you notice any of the above signs, schedule an appointment to discuss your options. Reach out to Bedminster Family & Cosmetic Dentistry to schedule an appointment today.
